A 1948 railroad dining car, originally built by
Western Pacific as a sleeper and later converted to a coach
serves as an attraction for The
Historical Society of Avon Park.
Finally, Auto Train converted the car to
a diner complete with buffet line, seating for 40 plus, sinks, a
stove, and refrigeration.
In 1986, the dining car was
purchased from the Zephyr Line by the Avon Park Historical Society
and placed adjacent to the Depot Museum.
|
Located at the rear of the museum, the dining car is
often the setting of a unique---and tasty!---meal. |

James Deal, who
often performs as the "conductor" in the railroad
dining car, also
doubles as a server.
|

Set-up for the typical elegant
style of dining the railroad was renown for, the Depot's Dining Car
is no exception. Wide aisles, windows at every table, and
plenty of seating space are just a few of the amenities that were
incorporated into the retro fit. Looking out the windows often
provides the diner with a view of passing freights and passenger
trains during your dining experience. Cool and comfortable,
the car is well insulated and air
conditioned.
Today the Dining Car serves as
both a teaching tool and a functioning dining car. Hosting
luncheons, meetings, and special functions.
| Patrons of our
dining car are often
served by trainees from the Ridge Area Arc. |
