MEET THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF AVON PARK:
Its Museum and Dining Car
Meet the Historical Society of Avon Park
Our historical society does more than collect, preserve and showcase the history of
our area. We take an active role serving as a resource for the community. Our
research room in the museum, our Sunday programs, the dining car operation, our
upcoming celebration of the pioneers of Avon Park, our about-to-be-released
historical video of the early days of Avon Park, all attest to our efforts to serve
our community.
One of our major goals is to acquaint the youth of Avon Park with their history. We
now partner with South Florida Community College by serving as a site for students
in their community service program.
Further, an education committee from our board
of directors is developing ways for local grammar school children to be exposed to
the history of their community. One such way, appropriate for both children and
adults, is to station long-term residents of Avon Park at the various museum
displays to present “the rest of the story” to museum visitors.
We are also seeking written memories from individuals who have grown up in Avon
Park. These memories will be put together in booklet format for purchase in the
museum.
Avon Park’s strong suit is its history. But we need to keep working at preserving
and presenting this history. If you’d like to work with us on any of these
projects, come join our society. Stop in at the museum or call 453-3525.
